ORL-NYRB Preview: What To Expect

Jack Bell

As Orlando welcomes the New York Red Bulls this evening for the Eastern Conference Final, fans can expect an exciting clash of contrasting styles that promises a fast-paced and high-intensity affair.

A look at New York Red Bulls

Under the guidance of coach Sandro Schwarz, the Red Bulls have built their identity around aggressive pressing, positional awareness, and a solid defensive structure. Let's break down how they play and what you can expect from them in today's game.

The High Press and Second Ball battles.

One of the defining features of the Red Bulls' season, is their relentless high press. This was significant in their semi-final match against their ‘Big Apple’ rivals New York City FC. They aim to disrupt their opponents early, making it difficult for teams to build out from the back. The high press is supported by their strong positional awareness, particularly in midfield, where they often win the second ball after a contested first touch. This ability to win the second ball can be crucial in transition, as we've seen in their recent goals, including two key strikes that came directly from these situations.

Tactical Formation: 3-4-3

The Red Bulls often set up in a 3-4-3 formation, which allows them to dominate the midfield and launch quick, direct attacks. From the goalkeeper, the ball is often played long, targeting the three forwards who position themselves to challenge the opposition's centre-backs. As the midfield pushes up, even if the Red Bulls don’t win the first ball, their setup ensures they are well-positioned to capitalize on the second ball near the edge of the box.

Aerial Threats in the Final Third

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Red Bulls' attacking play is their aerial prowess, especially in the final third. Despite being only 5'9", Belgium forward Dante Vanzeir has a fantastic leap, as demonstrated in his headed assist outjumping NYCFC’s James Sands (who stands at 6’1”) for the first goal in their last match. This set up Andres Carballo’s wonderstrike from outside the box to put them ahead early on. Expect the Red Bulls to continue utilizing this aerial strength, making them dangerous from crosses and set pieces.

Key Matchups: Wingbacks vs Orlando’s Wingers

A crucial battle will be in wide areas, with the Red Bulls' wingbacks, John Tolkin and Cameron Harper, needing to contain Orlando’s dangerous wingers. Facundo Torres and Iván Angulo are known for their pace and ability to create opportunities, so the Red Bulls' wide defenders will have to stay sharp and make crucial defensive interventions. Whether tracking back or joining the attack, Tolkin and Harper will play a pivotal role in limiting the threat from Orlando's wide players.

Forsberg’s Creativity in the Middle

The Red Bulls' attacking setup is often built around the creativity of their central attacking midfielder, Emil Forsberg. The Swedish international brings experience and vision to the team, and his ability to pick out passes and drive the attack will be key in breaking down Orlando’s defensive structure. Orlando’s midfielders, César Araujo and Wilder Cartagena, will need to keep a close eye on Forsberg and limit the space between the midfield and the central defenders. If Forsberg is allowed time and space, especially with his positional freedom, he could be the creative spark that unlocks Orlando’s defense.

Lewis Morgan: The Goal Scorer to Watch

With 13 goals this season, Lewis Morgan is the Red Bulls' top scorer and one of the players Orlando will need to keep an eye on. Morgan has gained experience with Miami and Celtic and is known for his sharp shooting ability and positioning in the final third. Expect him to be a constant threat, especially in counter-attacks and when the team is able to exploit space behind Orlando's defense.

Defensive Solidity and Tactical Flexibility

While the Red Bulls are known for their high pressing and attacking intent, coach Sandro Schwarz has implemented a defensive system that allows flexibility. The three centre-backs tend to drop deeper into a compact line, providing cover for the fullbacks and ensuring that there is always support at the back. This deeper line provides the space for the wingbacks to track back when needed or for a centre-back to drift wide if necessary, maintaining defensive coverage while still being able to launch quick attacks.

Orlando’s 4-4-2 and the Need for Defensive Resilience

Orlando City SC, set up in a 4-4-2 formation, will pose a different challenge for the Red Bulls. With two strikers and pacey wingers like Torres and Angulo, Orlando has the firepower to cause problems on the counter. The Red Bulls’ 3-4-3 formation may shift into a more defensive 5-2-3, with wingbacks getting back to form a solid defensive line. This could leave less space in the attacking areas, but it will be essential for the Red Bulls to stay compact and organized to deal with Orlando’s forward threat.

When two contrasting formations meet, it often leads to an open game with players frequently coming out of position. Expect both teams to leave spaces, making for an unpredictable and thrilling encounter. The Red Bulls’ ability to press high, control the midfield, and capitalize on aerial duels will be key, but they’ll need to stay organized defensively against Orlando’s quick counters and attacking combinations.

Conclusion: A Battle of Styles

In today’s match, expect a high-energy, back-and-forth contest. The Red Bulls’ aggressive pressing and ability to win second balls will be tested against Orlando’s direct and pace-driven attack. With contrasting formations, there’s potential for an open game where both teams will push and pull in various areas of the field. The result could come down to which team can better execute their tactical plan and capitalize on the spaces left by the opposing system. One thing is certain: it's going to be an exciting match!

On behalf of the City Beautiful, let’s hope for a convincing victory and a first ever spot in the MLS Cup Final!
